Historic area sees revival, in stages - Sacramento Living - Sacramento Food and Wine, Home, Health | Sacramento Bee

There is a rebirth taking place in the Alkali and Mansion Flats area of downtown Sacramento, neighborhoods nearly as old as the city itself.

Known for decades simply as a haven for drugs and the home of a notorious serial killer, the area is firmly in the grasp of urban renewal.

The most recent measure of that revival is taking place along busy 12th Street, where officials broke ground this week near the La Valentina light-rail station on a project consisting of 81 homes and ground-floor retail.
