Big changes are under way at downtown's venerable Sterling Hotel, where property owner D&S Development last month took over day-to-day operations following the departure of a financially strapped management group.
The 17-room boutique hotel at 13th and H streets remains open, as does its ballroom with Sacramento's Hannibal's Catering providing food service for weddings, banquets and other events.
D&S and Hannibal's are honoring existing contracts for several weddings, even though the previous managers already had collected substantial down payments for the events, says D&S exec Bay Miry.
"We didn't want to crush anybody's dreams," he says.
The hotel lobby and ballroom have been repainted and are getting new carpeting. Bigger changes are under way in the hotel's former Chanterelle restaurant.
