Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson says shopping center giant Westfield Corp. has agreed to sell Downtown Plaza if it's in the best interest of the city. The move could pave the way for a high-priced and much-needed renovation to K Street.
“Simply, I asked Westfield to step aside from the Downtown Plaza if the company wasn’t in position to invest at a significant level. Obviously, I don’t want our city held hostage. To its credit, Westfield agreed,” Johnson wrote in a blog early Tuesday morning at kevinjohnsonformayor.com. He later confirmed the agreement during a news conference Tuesday afternoon.
The city, headed by Johnson, has announced an aggressive effort to direct development on K Street, and the 1 million-square-foot shopping center is a critical component in the renaissance of the street — and downtown. (Story Continued...)
